US Brokers Ukraine Discussions in the UAE as Trump Administration Seeks for Conflict Resolution
Diplomatic negotiations including American, Russian, and Kyiv officials began in Abu Dhabi this Tuesday, marking the most recent stage in attempts to forge a peace agreement to conclude the protracted war in the region.
High-Level Delegates and Opening Discussions
US Army official Dan Driscoll allegedly met with a Russian team on the eve of the talks, with dialog extending into Tuesday.
“Negotiations are advancing smoothly with continued optimism. Secretary Driscoll is closely synchronised with the White House ... as these talks progress,” a spokesman stated.
Ukraine’s top intelligence official, Kyrylo Budanov, was also expected to take part in the proceedings, though details were vague whether face-to-face talks with Russian representatives would take place or if distinct one-on-one sessions would be held.
Membership of the Moscow group was not immediately clear. “We cannot provide details. Our position is to monitor press coverage,” a Kremlin representative told state media.
Background and Updated Peace Plan
These meetings follow recent negotiations in a European nation where US and Ukrainian officials reworked a draft US proposal for ending the conflict.
Moscow has not yet accepted the latest version of the proposal and is not expected to accept many of the Kyiv changes.
Russia’s top diplomat, Sergei Lavrov, declared that any amended peace plan must reflect the “essence and wording” of what was discussed during previous high-level talks between both countries.
Global Responses and Concerns
EU officials are reportedly struggling to stay engaged in the process as US representatives drive the efforts.
Finland’s president, Alexander Stubb, who has emerged as a key contact between the US and EU leaders, stated that the next few days would be crucial in efforts to reach a peace settlement.
He allegedly spoke with Kyiv’s leader and Nato representatives, stating that “Ukraine’s destiny must be determined by Ukrainians, and while European security matters are for Europe to resolve.”
Meanwhile, the French leader, Emmanuel Macron, warned against a peace deal that would represent a “capitulation” for the nation.
“The current proposal indicates what Moscow might find acceptable. But does this imply it should be endorsed by Ukraine and Europe? The answer is no,” he affirmed.
Details of the Original American Plan
The US proposal was reportedly composed of 28 points and was based on discussions between American and Russian representatives, with input from Ukrainian defense officials.
Key aspects of the plan reportedly involved:
- The nation relinquishing land currently occupied by Russia
- Further regions that would be required to be voluntarily surrendered
- Restrictions on the scale of the Ukrainian army
- Immunity for all participants in the war regarding violations
Latest Developments and Continuing Difficulties
American official reportedly traveled to Kyiv to update Zelenskyy on the proposal and urge rapid approval.
The pressure, coupled with the leaking of the plan, apparently shocked Ukrainian and European authorities.
Zelenskyy stated that the nation was facing one of the toughest moments in its history and was being compelled to decide between “losing our dignity or losing a key ally.”
Later, the US official briefed Nato representatives on the plan in the capital, with one attendee describing it as “a disastrous gathering” and stating that EU officials were shocked by both the content and manner of the presentation.
The US administration later softened its stance, stating that the 28-point plan was an “initial basis for negotiation” rather than a final ultimatum.
Security Situation Amid Negotiations
While peace talks proceed, Moscow has maintained its nightly strikes on Ukrainian urban centers.
Russian forces allegedly launched dozens of projectiles and hundreds of drones at objectives in and around the capital, according to Ukrainian sources.
The Ukrainian president emphasized that Moscow must not feel it could prevail in the conflict while negotiations were ongoing.
“Crucially, all allies must advance toward diplomacy collectively, with unified action. Sanctions and pressure on Moscow must yield outcomes,” he stated.
The capital’s leader confirmed that seven people had been fatally injured in the recent attack on the capital.
