The direst possible consequences of the climate emergency for the UK have been outlined by researchers, ranging from a searing 4C jump in temperatures to a two-metre rise in sea level. A separate possibility envisions a plunge of 6C in temperatures following the collapse of crucial Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset farming and energy demand.

Plausible Outcomes, Not Forecasts

These effects, certain ones are connected to critical climate thresholds, are considered as low probability but possible. The team explained that these scenarios filled a gap in forecasting that had rendered the UK not ready for extreme outcomes.

"The worst-case scenarios we have outlined should not be seen as certainties, but they are credible," commented the lead researcher who led the research. "Britain has been planning lacking the frameworks to test against catastrophic outcomes. We've now given decision-makers what they need to get ready for climate outcomes they pray never occur, but can’t afford to ignore."

A Suite of Severe Conditions Scenarios

A second set of dire projections details the potential extent of extreme weather between now and the close of the 2100s. These indicate that thermometer readings could soar in some months by up to 6C higher than average, while rainfall could be 300% of typical amounts.

The probability of the catastrophic events happening could not be calculated due to uncertainty about what action will be taken to tackle global warming and how the climate system will react. This approach was compared to security threat evaluations or resilience checks for economic stability.

Official experts has stated that the UK needs to "prepare for two degrees of warming" and examine the dangers for four degrees. Past policy documents have been labeled being "inadequate" by certain experts.
