Rescued from Ukraine Lioness Receives Essential Surgery
The Big Cat Sanctuary
An adolescent female lion rescued from war-torn the war zone has received vital oral operation to extract a severely infected fang caused by an abscess.
The lioness arrived at The Big Cat Sanctuary in Kent, England on March 14 after a fundraising effort by managing director Cam Whitnall, who raised £500,000 to support her and four other rescued lions.

The procedure was performed on Friday by dentist an experienced animal dentist, who has cared for hundreds of large felines.
"When I examined the lioness's oral cavity, I could see right away the broken tooth was highly inflamed," said Mr Kertesz.
He thought the dental issue was caused by a trauma sustained over twelve months back, leading to bacteria producing toxins within the fang.
"My philosophy is non-human oral health issues should be addressed in the safest, the most conservative and safest way," he explained.
Mr Kertesz explained that as Lira did not need to catch prey, extraction was the most "logical and humane option."
The Animal Rescue Facility
The sanctuary reported the removed fang was 8cm (3.14 inches) long, with the dentist having to extract a accumulated infection from beneath the tooth and close the significant opening with seven dissolving sutures.
He additionally conducted a root canal treatment on the corresponding top fang, which was discovered to have a similar issue.
The curator, curator at the facility, declared the procedure was a "complete success."
She noted the staff had observed "a minor swelling on the lioness's face" but it had been impossible to assess "how serious the condition was."
"The lioness will be somewhat sore to begin with, but now that the infectious materials are out of her body, she will begin improving over the next few days," added the curator.
This vital operation marks a significant step in Lira's recovery after her rescue from Ukraine.
