Manchester United Set to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Signing for United

The forward, with half a year remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League team.

Departure from Munich has been anticipated since she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. According to reports, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.

Consistent Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a major uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Gathering Steam at Old Trafford

Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club appear to be building momentum.

Recent performances feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the winter break has seen further activity:

  1. The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s extension, a club official commented: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
