Harvard ex-president Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is departing from the directorate at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a collection of emails between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became public.
Summers commented in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the chance to have contributed, enthusiastic about the prospects of the enterprise, and eagerly await following their advancement".
The former Harvard president, who previously presided over the Ivy League institution, declared on Monday that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his relationship with Epstein.
Message Exchange
The newly public emails demonstrated that the official communicated with Epstein until the eve of Epstein's 2019 arrest for accused human trafficking of minors.
In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company stated it accepted his determination to depart.
"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the insight he provided to the directors," OpenAI remarked.
Political Context
This news comes after the two houses of the US legislature voted on Tuesday to approve a legislation that would require the Department of Justice to make public its documents on the case.
The legislation will subsequently move to the administration of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. He has indicated he plans to sign the bill, after changing his view on the subject following pressure from his base.
Correspondence Findings
A batch of Epstein-connected correspondence released by the House Oversight Committee days ago included multiple well-known personalities in the billionaire's former circle, without suggesting any criminal activity by those figures.
The messages indicated that the economist and the financier dined together frequently, with he often seeking to introduce the academic to prominent world leaders.
Personal Response
After the emails were shared with the wider community, the former official stated he took "total ownership for my poor decision to maintain corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".
He added that he desired "to restore trust and repair connections with the individuals most important to me".
Previous Positions
The professor held senior posts under two Democratic presidents; functioning as economic leader under the former president, and as head of the National Economic Council under President Obama.
He headed the institution from five years and remains a faculty member there. When declaring his step-down from public roles earlier on this week, he indicated he would continue his academic responsibilities.
Additional Consequences
Following his declaration on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning policy institute in DC where Summers was a researcher, verified that he was no longer affiliated with the institution.
He joined the directorate of the AI company, which creates the language model, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to oust its CEO Sam Altman.
