Eurovision Used to Be a Campy Joy – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.
A new acronym came to light a couple of months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it means “Child casualty without any family left”. This term is found only in Gaza, as stated by medical experts such as paediatricians. Typically, it is unusual for medical staff to care for a minor who has seen the death of their whole family. Yet, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the widespread destruction in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of child amputees surpasses that of any other region in the world. No sense of normalcy in many doctors coming back from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being deliberately targeted.
An Unimaginable Crisis In Spite Of a Supposed Ceasefire
The Gaza Strip continues to be an utter catastrophe. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations contend that violations are continuing. Authorities disputes these accusations, consistent with how it refutes all charges it is accused of. Meanwhile, while traumatised orphans are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its declared purpose of “unity and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to roll out a blood-red carpet for Israel, although a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. Since this, we are told, is what unity manifests as.
The contest, notably excluded Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza appears to be completely different.
A Double Standard
Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an bid to politicise Eurovision. Ignore the report that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have escalated. Disregard the condition that global media are still denied freely reporting in Gaza. This entire context, evidently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Contest Continues While Ignoring Unimaginable Suffering
The contest turns 70 next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza now. The event will proceed, but it will likely never recapture the whimsical pleasure it once represented. A competition that once promoted peace has transformed into a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
