Bluefin Tuna Sells for Unprecedented Sum of $3.2m at Tokyo New Year Sale
A bulky bluefin tuna made headlines at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a historic bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the market's inaugural auction of the year.
The successful bid for the 243kg fish was placed by the company of a popular sushi restaurant group, which operates restaurants throughout Japan and internationally.
"The year's tuna signals good luck," remarked the entrepreneur, a regular bidder at the traditional new year's auction.
Known as the King of Tuna, this industry figure is renowned for placing high bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile January auctions.
Auction Surprise and Historic Precedent
After the auction, the successful bidder informed the press that he was "surprised at the amount," adding, "I expected we would be able to acquire it a little for less, but the price skyrocketed in no time."
This most recent acquisition surpasses his own notable purchases:
- He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen a year later.
- In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).
Despite previously remarking that he thought he "bid too high," he has now gone on to surpass his own record once again.
An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids
The opening auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously known for sky-high prices. The previous year, the first tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a separate culinary group, which stated the fish would be served at its locations across Japan.
The intense energy at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has evolved into a major tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
Immediate Consumption
The extremely valuable tuna was quickly processed for patrons at the bidder's sushi establishments shortly after the auction was finished.
"I believe like I've started the year in a good way after tasting something so lucky as the year begins," shared one elated customer.
