Biden Bowl, Any Takers? Italy's PM to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause

Relinquishing undesired offerings can be seen as slightly impolite – except if it's done for a noble purpose.

A Charitable Clear-Out

The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction an estimated 270 gifts given to her by foreign dignitaries during her travels. The diverse haul is said to contain gifts including a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.

The collection, together, have an approximate value of €800,000. They will be sold to the highest bidder by a Italian art dealer. The specific date has not been finalized, but the goal is to hold the auction before Christmas, with the revenue going to various charities.

Palazzo Chigi Holdings

These gifts reportedly stored in a secure area on the third floor of the government headquarters. Reports indicate that Meloni is also considering auction off gifts received by her political forerunners that have been stored away indefinitely.

The detailed catalog remains officially released, but some insight was gleaned earlier this year when an 11-page list of all declared gifts was presented in parliament. The discussion focused on if a statutory cap on gift value was being respected. According to regulation, a prime minister must declare presents worth more than €300.

An International Array of Gifts

Among the items:

  • A silk accessory from the leader of Albania, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A customary Indian garment from India's prime minister.
  • A case of jewelry from the president of Slovakia.
  • A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
  • A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
  • A tablet from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Artworks from Moldova.
  • Various other items including cosmetics, a skateboard, and numerous carpets received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Possibly the oddest gifts included the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.

Diplomatic Context

Supporters have applauded Meloni, mostly from within her party, with garnering support from foreign leaders and positioning Italy as a key protagonist on the international platform once again.

This charitable initiative symbolizes a novel approach to handle the state presents that accumulate during a political career.
