Aaron Rai Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Playoff Showdown Against Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated remarkable composure to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the final day, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense playoff following a rollercoaster last day of competition.
The Englishman sank a decisive birdie putt from around eight foot to clinch the win, echoing his only previous Rolex Series triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a play-off win over Fleetwood.
Final Round Drama
Rai started the last day with a single stroke lead over countryman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a total score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, five-under closing round that featured seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
The challenger moved one shot clear with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie putt on the 16th, but his rival pulled level again on the seventeenth and then missed a 10-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the last green.
Playoff Climax
That set up a play-off at Yas Links where the eventual winner prevailed to claim the title and $1.5 million (ÂŁ1.13m) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even more person. To play with him the final two rounds was really special,” said the winner, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on your game and maintaining focus, it’s difficult to describe at the present how it feels. It is amazing to be holding the trophy.”
